Two great celebrations anchor our year: a maypole in ribbons when the meadow wakes, and a quiet spiral of light on the darkest days of December.
How children feel the year turn.
Our days follow the rhythm of the seasons, and festivals are the high points of that rhythm, looked forward to for weeks and prepared for with songs and crafts and whispered excitement. They gather our little community together, mark the turning of the year, and become the memories children carry longest.
May Faire, when the meadow wakes.
When spring reaches Green Gables, up goes the maypole. There are flower crowns and painted faces, ribbons in every color, and the old dance round the pole, children weaving in and out until the ribbons braid themselves tight and the whole yard is singing.
Families spread out on the grass and stay a while. It is the school at its most joyful, and everyone is welcome.
Winter Solstice, a promise of light.
On the darkest days of the year we slow all the way down. The children walk a quiet spiral, one at a time, each carrying a small light. Step by step the path grows brighter, until the whole spiral is glowing.
It is the gentlest moment of our year: a promise, made together, that the light always comes back.
